Drawing in the Context of Fieldwork: A Starter Bibliography
Carol Hendrickson
Marlboro College
Here is a list of books that can be helpful in thinking about drawing in the context of fieldwork, writing field notes, and processing field materials. Audiences for the different entries range from academic to popular and reflect a number of different motivating factors for keeping field journals. The list begs for additional references, but it is a start and can help address the question: “Why keep visual as well as verbal notes in the context of fieldwork?”
The division of these books into different sections is a bit arbitrary but the idea is to group ones with a similar focus and point people in helpful directions. As you’ll see, I’ve separated out nature journaling from the first group as there are many works on documenting the natural, biological world. There are also many books on travel journaling. I included only a small sample in “drawing out in the world” but many more can be located fairly easily. There are also sections on artists’ books and making books. Some people might want to hand-make a journal for special fieldwork purposes. And becoming familiar with artists’ books is another way of thinking about the potential for combining the visual and verbal in note-taking and beyond.
Please consider this “just a beginning” and think what you might add.
